Leading a FLR when you don’t feel confident: pick one rule and hold it

Let me guess, darling. You are waiting to feel like her.

The woman who wakes certain. Who knows what she wants from him before the kettle is on, who never fumbles the moment, who issues her wishes in that low unhurried voice and watches him scramble to keep up. You are waiting for her to arrive, fully assembled, before you dare begin.

She does not come first. She comes last, I’m afraid, and rather later than you would like. So we will not wait for her. I am going to put you to work without her, and let her catch up in her own time.

The wobble does not disqualify you

Here is what trips you, and trips very nearly every woman who writes to me in those first uncertain months. You feel wobbly, and you decide the wobble disqualifies you. As though command were a mood you had to be in, rather than a thing you simply do.

It is not. You can feel an utter fraud, stomach in knots, voice not quite steady, and still tell him precisely what to do, and he will do it. He is not obeying your confidence, darling. He is obeying you. The instruction lands the same whether you delivered it like a queen or murmured it while wishing the floor would swallow you whole.

The women who lead beautifully were not born unflappable, and they are the first to say so. In our survey of dominant women, the advice they pressed on the men chasing them kept circling back to patience: a woman needs time to step into her power, every bit as much as he needs time to shed his old habits. So they stopped waiting to feel ready and started behaving as though they already were, and the poise turned up afterwards, took a long bow, and pretended it had done all the heavy lifting.

You do not need to feel like her yet. I have said as much about the imposter feeling that keeps so many women hovering in the doorway. Read that, then come straight back, because there is work to do.

Choose one thing and make him feel it

You will be tempted to remake him from the ground up. Resist it. Empires are not run on Tuesday’s enthusiasm, and neither is he.

Begin with one thing. A single act he now performs because you said so, and not because the mood took him. His coffee, made the way you like it, at the hour you name. The shirt you lay out, worn whether or not it is the one he would have chosen. The asking before, where he used to simply please himself. The coming to bed on your word, and not a moment sooner, however the evening has wound him up.

One. Chosen by you, said aloud, and held. Small enough to keep on your dreariest morning, pointed enough that you both feel the rather delicious little tilt the instant he obeys. Be modest in your ambitions here, kittens. Ambition is precisely what has you abandoning grand schemes by Thursday and deciding the whole business was never for you. A single rule, kept without fail, will school you in your own authority faster than a fortnight of elaborate protocols you quietly let slide.

The morning you would rather not bother

And then comes the morning that is the entire lesson.

You wake flat. Charmless. About as commanding as a damp flannel, headache in place, not the faintest wish to be anybody’s anything. And he looks to you, as he now does, for the thing you decided he does at your word.

You give it anyway.

Not because you feel like a goddess. You feel like cold toast. You give it because your rule runs on what you decided in better spirits, and not on how you happen to feel at seven in the morning. The doubt will pipe up and call you a fraud. Let it natter on. The rule asks only to be kept, and that you can manage with trembling hands and not a scrap of conviction.

You are allowed to do this badly at first, darling. The rule will not sulk about it. It was built for exactly this, so that you might be thoroughly unsure of yourself and obeyed in the very same breath.

Let him do the lifting

Now, a word for the man reading over your shoulder. Yes, you. Sit up.

His whole purpose, in these early days, is to make it easy for you. A man who genuinely wants this does not loiter about waiting for you to feel the part. He gives you a clean yes and means it. The glass refilled before you have thought to ask. The yes ma’am that lands a half-beat before you have finished the sentence. The kneeling, when you fancy it, prompt and without a trace of a sulk.

None of it costs you a thing to accept, and all of it gives you somewhere firm to stand while you find your feet. He does not need you finished, darling. He needs you to point, and he is rather hoping you will mean it. Each clean little act of obedience is him holding up a mirror and showing you, in your most flattering light, precisely what you look like in charge. Watch his face on the flat morning, when you hold the line in spite of yourself. That look of relief will steady you faster than any amount of muttered encouragement at the bathroom mirror.

His surrender comes first, not last

Here is the part everyone has back to front, so do read it twice.

You have been told the order of things. Become confident, and then he will kneel. Find your power, and only then may you wield it. As though his surrender were a rosette pinned to your chest at the finish line, awarded once you had privately certified yourself sufficiently dominant to deserve it.

What nonsense. His surrender is not your prize for arriving. It is how you set off. You behave as though you are in charge before you feel it, he obeys before you think you have earned it, and you carry on like that, one unremarkable evening after another, until some perfectly ordinary night, drink in hand, mid-instruction, it dawns on you that you stopped pretending several weeks ago. You did not wait to become her, darling. You were far too busy running him to notice she had moved in.

Tonight, then

So. Tonight. Not a grand declaration. One rule, chosen by you, said to his face before the week turns over.

If this was your idea all along, you already know which one it is. It is the order you have been circling for months and never quite issued. Issue it. And if it was he who asked, who pressed all this into your hands hoping you would run with it, then take the very thing he most longs to give you and make it the thing he no longer gets to choose. The move is the same either way. One rule. Kept without exception, and kept hardest on the morning you would most love to let it go.

That is where she comes from, darling. Not from waiting to feel ready. From a rule set tonight, and a refusal to drop it in the morning.
